When to Seek Emergency Care
Most TOS symptoms are chronic, not emergencies, but some are. If you have any of the following, go to the ER or call 911. Do not wait.
Sudden arm swelling or discoloration (blue, purple, or mottled), or a feeling of fullness or heaviness in the arm. Possible blood clot (venous TOS / effort thrombosis).
Loss of pulse, a cold or pale hand, or sudden ischemic pain. Possible arterial compromise.
Sudden severe weakness or inability to move the arm or hand.
Chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood. Possible pulmonary embolism from an arm clot.
Sudden severe headache, vision changes, slurred speech, or fainting. Possible vascular event (including subclavian steal).
These events are rare but time-sensitive. When in doubt, get checked.
